“My favourite moments are when the lights go on - people suddenly see the hidden beliefs and stories that have been driving them - and then they get to choose.”

Sasha says:

“I was working with a client who was unusually psychologically aware, a highly driven client, on an experiential, group exercise where he had to move towards an important goal, past three people representing his ‘Voices of Doubt’…

It became apparent along the way that my client had lost his mum when he was five. He had a young family now, was working a full-time demanding job, while also planning to do a training. He wanted to work out how he could do the training and when he reached his goal, which was represented by a chair, I followed an instinct and took the chair away…

I said: “What do you see?”, wondering if he might see that there would always be another goal but also understanding he might just want to punch me. He responded by saying: “Can I be honest?” I said: “Yes, of course”, somewhat dreading what was coming. He said, “I see some steps up ahead of me and my mother sitting at the top of them.”

It was incredibly moving and from there we were able to work with the real goal, which was to step off some of his goals. His mother didn’t need him to push himself so hard…

It felt such a privilege to walk with this man as he grasped the coaching challenge, shared his vulnerability and made the huge change he needed, to bring more balance into his life. It also showed the power of the experiential - the body and the imagination - to unlock what the brain alone so often cannot grasp…

This is the kind of thing that makes me glad to work with OMA.”
