Global Mining Company

The problem

Richard Olivier was speaking at a conference in Europe and delivering part of our Henry V programme when an attendee had a transformative experience. Two years later, we received a call from that man’s PA, who said, “What did you do to our CEO?” The CEO had been profoundly affected by Richard’s delivery and felt compelled to change his company’s harmful mining practices. He needed a way to identify what his company was doing and do something about it. After hearing the phrase “Turning the Battlefield into a Garden”, a metaphor used in the story, he was inspired to re-evaluate his company’s environmental impact and make positive changes.

The solution

Initially, we worked with the top 100 executives in Europe who served on the board. We divided them into groups of 25 and delivered a three-day programme to each group. The 100 executives were a diverse group, including hard-nosed engineers as well as other leaders. The CEO pitched his vision of making the company environmentally sustainable – an ambitious dream that must have seemed impossible, but one he felt was the right thing to pursue.

Five years later, we returned to deliver a programme on influential leadership, based on our Julius Caesar programme.

The result

In just five years, the company’s transformation from environmentally damaging mining practices was remarkable. After implementing the programme, the company had sold off or ceased all mining that harmed the environment. Recycling became their most profitable division, their share price rose sharply, and staff retention reached an all-time high.
